Maharashtra leads technological education through its creation of India’s very first Artificial Intelligence (AI) University. IT Minister Ashish Shelar declared this initiative to establish India’s first AI University on World Education Day which made Maharashtra a leading force in AI education and innovation and industry engagement.
The government of Maharashtra created the first Artificial Intelligence University for India. State Information and Technology Minister Ashish Shelar introduced the university at World Education Day on January 25, 2025. Maharashtra pursues its position as top leader within the fields of AI and blockchain and quantum computing and cybersecurity education through this initiative. The Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil leads the university establishment project at the same time as officials develop a state-level AI and Cybersecurity Policy to support the initiative. A dedicated group of experts was appointed to monitor how the university will be put into practice.
The university will soon start operations because authorities have not released an official launch date to fulfill Maharashtra’s objective of driving AI innovation and workforce training.
UpGrad & Maharashtra: A Game-Changing Partnership
Through partnership with the Maharashtra government upGrad implemented a program to create AI Excellence Centers and an Institute of AI Excellence throughout the entire state. The partnership executed through an MoU at Davos 2025 involves an initial funding amount of ₹2,150 crore for creating world-class AI professionals who will generate career opportunities
upGrad will establish the Urban University and Campus Hubs through the “Educity” initiative with three international institutions as partners. The AI Excellence Centers and Institute of AI Excellence across the state will be established through a partnership between ATLAS SkillTech University and upGrad.
Empowering Rural and Urban Talent
Students both in urban and rural campuses experience positive effects from AI university systems. Dedication towards training 250,000 rural youths will serve as the second main pillar of the initiative by solving skill deficiencies in rural communities and developing rural entrepreneurship.

The state of Maharashtra leads the nation in implementing AI technology. Nagpur became home to an AI Center of Excellence by Google when the state forged its first AI partnership prior to this development. The establishment of this AI university will transform Maharashtra into a worldwide center for AI training and research which will help India reach its goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2030.

The Maharashtra government moves forward with the state-level AI and Cybersecurity Policy creation process to boost competitiveness in new technologies. The government uses Aaple Sarkar portal and additional public services to integrate AI with the purpose of bettering service delivery and governance standards.

The AI University functions as a research hub and entrepreneurship center that enables technology enterprises and startups to join forces on the development of AI-driven solutions. The state of Maharashtra develops its AI educational and development capabilities by supporting talent development together with innovation so it can become a worldwide AI center.
